    City Looking to Cut 50 Jobs

    Further budget cuts will likely hit the city in the next fiscal year. 50 jobs (31 occupied) are tabbed, including 8 in the fire department and 6 in the police department. Fortunately a number of them are currently vacant. Library services would be cut to 5 days a week.

    Oak Ave House Fire

    A UPS driver spotted smoke coming out of an Oak Avenue house this morning; after calling the fire department, he tried to get residents out. The residents were not home at the time; while the owners' dogs got out, 6 cats are unaccounted for. The cause of the fire is not known.

    Fireman Injured in Historic District Fire

    A local firefighter was injured while fighting a fire on Riley Street in the historic district. The firefighter was not seriously injured, as he ws cut from glass. The business suffered about $8500 in damage.

    3 Alarm Fire Contained

    A grass fire set loose along the bike trail on Willow Bend Road this evening; flames got within a block of homes before firefighters put it out. No word on how it started.

    Fire Vacates 3 Families

    A fire in the upper apartments of the Folsom Ranch Apartments caused 19 people to be vacated. There were no injuries, and firefighters saved many animals, including a cat and a bunny. Though the apartments are damaged, all families were placed in vacant apartments elsewhere in the complex.

    Haz Spill Drill on Thursday

    If you see a plethora of emergency vehicles in Thursday in the Willow Creek and Flower Drive area, do not be alarmed. Multiple agencies will be conducting a mock hazardous materials spill. Multiple agencies are doing similar events across the nation.

    8 Escape House Fire

    8 family members escaped a house fire on Cobb Circle today. The house was considered a total loss, however no one was injured in the blaze.

    Folsom Fire Dept Helps Out

    9 firefighters from Folsom's fire department were sent down to fight the fires in Southern California. Engine 38 and OES Engine 270 are currently fighting in the San Diego area, fighting a fire on an Indian reservation, and another one near San Diego Wild Animal Park.

    Emergency Fireworks Ordinance Enacted

    City Council had an emergency meeting last night to enact an emergency ordinance regarding fireworks, due to the high fire danger. Fireworks are now prohibited after July 4, at 11 city parks, and on private property.

    Huge Blaze Erupts in the Preserve

    More than 200 firefighters were on hand to fight a brush fire that took off early Thursday evening, over by Young Wo cemetery. 2 storage sheds were burned, and HazMat crews were on hand to help fight the fire. Black smoke could be seen as far away as Sacramento, and was very obvious at Thursday Night Market.

    Folsom Picks New Fire Chief

    The City of Folsom has hired a new Fire Chief, to replace Eric Dutton, who is retiring. Sam M. Haverty is currently the Assistant Chief for the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, and will replace Dutton in mid-July. You may know Haverty from his 2005 liver donation to help save William Weigand, the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento.

    Folsom FD Gets Much-Needed Upgrade

    Folsom Firefighters were happy to see a couple of new vehicles at their disposal - a new fire engine, as well as a water rescue boat. In previous years, neighboring stations would have to come in with a boat, at a time when time is very critical.

    Fire in Catlin Park

    Prairie Oaks residents had a bit of a scare today, as half the park was burned in a grass fire. Fratis Street residents were temporarily evacuated as the fire burned, but it was contained quickly before any structure fires. Fireworks are suspected as the culprit of the fire.

    Grass Fire Scorches EDH

    A grass fire burned about 50 acres of land on the Folsom/El Dorado Hills border on Saturday. No homes were harmed, however some endangered habitats were in the way of the fire. The cause is unknown, however it started close to a subdivision.

    Folsom Fire Adds Some Muscle

    Folsom Fire Department recently got a $70,000 grant, which was used to purchase a swiftwater rescue boat and a couple of thermal imaging cameras. This is great news to boaters - search crews can now get to Folsom Lake or Lake Natoma 10-15 minutes quicker in the event of an emergency. Story in the Bee and FolsomLife.com.

    Folsom Firefighters May be on ESPN

    The Firefighters Combat Challenge is under way in Katy, Texas, where Folsom Fire Capt. Clint Madden and 3 other Folsom firefighters will take on various fire-related tasks. From there, they travel to El Paso for the US National Championship and possible TV time on ESPN. Full story in the Telegraph.

    Brush Fire in North Folsom Contained

    A brush fire was burning along Folsom-Auburn Road, close to a subdivision in Folsom. Folsom-Auburn and Oak Avenue were closed as firefighters controlled the fire. There was no structure damage, although the fire came within 60 feet of houses and a historic orchard was burned. More on the KCRAChannel, the Telegraph, and the Bee.

    Folsom's City Budget Includes New Positions

    Despite the economic problems of the state, the city of Folsom is benefitting from increased sales tax, water rates, sewer rates, garbage rates, and property taxes. With $12 million more to use than last year, the city is able to build a city library and downtown parking structure, and hire more employees. This includes 5 new police officers, 5 new crime analysts, and additional funds for the Fire Department. More is in the Bee.

    Broadstone Gets New Fire Station

    A $2.5 million fire station, the first fire station built in Folsom in over a decade, was opened last month and will serve the Broadstone area of Folsom. 12 new firefighters will be employed in the 11,000 square foot facility, and is a welcome addition to Folsom and the Broadstone area. Another fire station is planned at the corner of Blue Ravine and East Natoma as well. More information is available in the Sacramento Bee.
