2 Tracks for Light Rail
In what looks like a state-mandated requirement for green transportation alternatives, Highway 50 is getting the go-ahead for an extra HOV lane. Part of the agreement is adding an extra light rail line all the way to Folsom. This would double the amount of trips in between Folsom and Sunrise, currently running once every 30 minutes.Labels: Highway 50, Light Rail

Work on Parking Structure Begins

Care to Take the Train to Placerville?
What were once-flourishing railroads are now little more than a distant memory. A local group is proposing to restore the rail line that starts at Historic Folsom and ends all the way up to Placerville. Excursion trains would then take people up the hill on weekends. While few doubt the train would be fun, so far nobody's come up with a price tag. * Archived story from the BeeLabels: Light Rail

Hidden Gold in Folsom
It's no secret that Folsom's start was that of a 19th century gold-mining community. What is a little-known item is that you can still pan for gold - on the weekends, the interpretive area is open with a blacksmith, gold panning, a settler's cabin, as well as old rail cars. Check it out when you are looking for a weekend diversion!Labels: Light Rail

Light Rail Not Moving Many Homeless
Many feared that the addition of light rail to Folsom would attract an unwelcome amount of homeless. According to the Advisory Committee on Homeless in Folsom, the homeless population has not raised. Current homeless programs appear to be adequate to fit current needs.Labels: Light Rail

The light rail ramp to the bridge is used only on special occasions, but is being considered to be opened up to traffic for now. Historic-Style Garage OK'd for Old Folsom
a four-story parking garage has been approved to be built in the parking lot behind Yager's on Sutter Street. The structure will contain 320 spaces, to the tune of $9 million. The architecture will resemble 19th century er... parking garages.Labels: Light Rail, Sutter Street

Importing Transients?
The trickling effects of light rail are starting to appear. Residents (and homeless) have noticed a rise in the homeless population since light rail has come to town... will they stay? It appears that police presence and Folsom's homeless shelter are not keen on the prospect of chronic homelessness and loitering in city limits. More in the Bee.Labels: Folsom Police, Light Rail

Light Rail Delayed
Light Rail to Folsom's historic district has been pushed back yet again from April 2005 to October 2005, due to property negotiations. With the Dam Road closure and increasing traffic along Highway 50, this is not good news for commuters. Budget Crunch Keeps Hitting Folsom... Latest Casualty: Light Rail
The state's budget crisis has forced many projects to be pushed to the curb, and funding will be seriously scaled back for every department in the state. The latest department to get hit was the Department of Transportation, which Governor Davis has proposed more than $1 Billion in cuts. $139 Million in cuts will directly impact the Sacramento Valley, meaning the Folsom light rail project will likely get seriously delayed or scrapped altogether. Folsom and Rancho Cordova officials will be meeting over the next 45 days to figure out where to go from here. More is in the Bee.

Will Folsom House a Light Rail Yard?
The progression of light-rail to the city of Folsom poses a new question: Where to put the rail yard. This poses an interesting dilemma, as Rancho Cordova is concerned with housing it in their business park area, since residents may be concerned with a rail yard's image. The former Mine Shaft has been tossed around as an idea, and administrators are being asked to look in to the city of Folsom as a possibility as well. So far, across from the auto mall has been the only location mentioned. More information is available in the Sacramento Bee.

Price of Progress: Oak Trees to be Removed for Light Rail
Folsom city leaders are considering removing the protective status from nearly 60 trees along Folsom Boulevard, in order for Light Rail to be expanded toward historic Folsom. The original list of trees to be removed included up to 350 trees, however effort have been made to minimize the number of trees removed. More details are available in the Sacramento Bee.
