    South of 50 Plans Start

Though the proposed land south of US 50 have not been annexed yet, many consider it only a matter of time. Results from community workshops show that residents are concerned about 3 things - schools, water, and impact fees. What will be there is unknown, but Coucilman Jeff Starsky would like to see a 4-year university on Folsom land. More in the Folsom Telegraph.

    Folsom Growth Initiative Thrown Out

A grassroots effort was put together within the last year, in an effort to curb growth south of US 50 significantly. The initiative was aimed to add two lanes to Highway 50, preserve all oak trees, maintain 50% of the land in farming, and requiring voter approval for expansion. The iniative was thrown out, and will not be on the November ballot. Details

    2 Competing Initiatives on Ballot

In what is likely to confuse the heck out of voters, there are 2 separate initiatives on the November ballot regarding Folsom's sphere of influence of land south of US 50. The city-sponsored initiative would codify environmental standards on the land; The competing ballot initiative would require 2 more lanes to Highway 50, 100% of oak woodlands to be preserved, and 50% of the land to be kept for agricultural use. City Officials Pump Measure A

Measure A, a half-cent sales tax passed in 1988, has provided for much needed road improvements over the years, including the Lake Natoma Bridge. The tax is scheduled to last until 2008. City officials would like to extend it to 2039 so we can fund such major projects as the Folsom Dam bridge. This time around, 66% will be required (as opposed to 50%) to pass the bond. Bob Fish Takes Matters in to His Own Hands

Folsom City Council members are very familiar with Bob Fish, who has been a staple at city council meetings for some time. The planned growth advocate has been active in the community for around a decade, speaking up on issues from city parks to water meters. Fish is a big proponent of the voters deciding whether or not Folsom should annex south of Highway 50, and is not afraid to let city hall know about it. Fish has been profiled in the Sacramento Bee - check it out.

To Annex or Not to Annex, That is the Question

Annexing the land south of Highway 50 seems to be a hot topic that nobody really agrees about. Some people favor annexing the land, and feel it's the City Council's decision to do it, while others feel it would be more prudent to fix the problems we already have, and also feel it's the voter's decision whether or not to annex that land. Where do the candidates stand? Read this article in the Bee to find out.
